The Story of Alessandro and his Father (Sabbatical Reflection #3)
In a world where fear often holds sway and the focus is, on growth, ROI and predictable success it's easy to overlook the importance of having a vision and practicing patience. However every now and then a story comes along that serves as a reminder of these virtues. Today I'd like to share with you the inspiring tale of Tomassio and his father—a narrative that embodies tradition, determination and an unwavering dedication to pursuing a dream.
Tomassio’s father once held a job that many would consider the pinnacle of career success. Despite the comfort and security it provided he felt a longing to reconnect with his roots. In a seemingly irrational move he decided to leave it all and return to his hometown. His new aspiration? To become a cheesemaker—not any cheesemaker but one intent on reviving the nearly forgotten Langhe Sheep Tuma cheese.
Embarking on this endeavor was no feat. The recipe for this age cheese was not easily accessible. Armed with a bottle of wine Tomassio’s father embarked on visits to each of his neighbors in search of the secrets, behind Langhe Sheep Tuma.
He knocked on doors and exchanged numerous stories before finally uncovering the elusive recipe. The journey was a test of perseverance and patience; traits that would later define his work.
After discovering the real recipe the work began in earnest. His father dove headfirst into the cheese making process, with dedication and a deep reverence for tradition. Every step was carried out meticulously by hand showcasing a labor of love. Alessandro himself spent hours caring for the sheep. Participating in the cheese making rituals fostering an appreciation for the bond between the land, animals and their creations.
Their intentionality to cheese production turned it into an art form, each part reflecting the patience and foresight that guided them ti their masterpiece. As I sat at their table indulging in cheese and tales, reflecting on my time assisting with the sheep and preparing the cheese, care I was struck by the significance of these values. Tomassio’s father revived a forgotten tradition and infused it with a fresh sense of purpose and potential.
Inheriting his fathers passion and wisdom Tomassio expressed a truth; "You have a choice between creating water or crafting cheese; it's up, to you."This simple profound statement captures the essence of their journey. Further, it serves as a metaphor, for our own experiences. We find ourselves at a crossroads between fear and hope between staying stagnant and embracing growth. The choice is ours to make. To either stay still wishing for change or to take a leap of faith into the unknown with patience and trust.
Just as Tomassio’s father pursued his dreams we are encouraged to follow our paths. It is a promise that we're not alone on this journey. Through vision we can look beyond obstacles. By being patient we welcome others to walk alongside us in this journey trusting that God is paving the way
Reflecting on Tomassio and his father’s tale reminds me that the true essence of our efforts lies not in triumph but, in pursuing our visions while having the patience to see them through. Let us draw inspiration from their story and embrace the challenges, uncertainties and transformative power of Gods vision in our lives.
