The Great Vigil of Easter
Saturday, April 4 | 7:00 PM | Sanctuary
Have you ever experienced the Easter Vigil? If not, this is the year to come. The Great Vigil of Easter is one of the most ancient and beautiful services in the Christian tradition, dating back to the earliest centuries of the Church. Christians have gathered for this service since at least the second century, keeping watch in prayer and celebration as we move from the darkness of Good Friday into the light of the Resurrection.
The service begins outside in darkness with the lighting of a new fire and the Paschal Candle—the great symbol of Christ’s risen light. From there we move into the sanctuary by candlelight as we hear the sweeping story of God’s salvation throughout Scripture, renew our baptismal promises (and sometimes celebrate baptisms), and finally proclaim the joyful news: “Alleluia! Christ is risen!”
After the quiet and reflection of Lent, the Vigil marks the moment when joy returns to the Church. Music swells, bells ring, and the first Eucharist of Easter is celebrated. Incense is also used during the service, adding to the beauty and ancient character of this sacred liturgy.
This unique service lasts about 90 minutes and is a deeply meaningful way to enter into Easter. It’s also a wonderful option for those who would like to celebrate the Resurrection on Saturday evening and enjoy a quieter Easter Sunday morning with family.
If you’ve never attended an Easter Vigil before, we warmly encourage you to come and experience one of the most powerful and hope-filled liturgies of the entire Christian year.
All are welcome.
