Christ Will Come Again
First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!”
2 Peter 3:3-4
It’s interesting that the Prayer Book’s Daily Office for Advent starts with Peter’s warning about Christ’s second coming. But then again, last Sunday was Christ the King day, in which we acknowledge that Christ truly is the King and will one day rule in a new world filled with God’s righteousness.
Maybe you have seen the commercial on TV for Dr. David Jeremiah’s new book, The Great Disappearance, where people are working, playing, etc. and one suddenly disappears, while others are left behind. I don’t plan to read the book but it certainly gives me pause to ponder whether I will be the one taken up to heaven or be left behind. I don’t know about you, but “I want to be in the number, when the Saints go marching in!” Peter goes on to tell us that while we are waiting for the end times to arrive, we should make every effort to live peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in God’s sight. Much easier said than done!
When Father Justin asked our Daughters of the King chapter to write personal devotions for each day of Advent, we were not sure we could really do it. But what has unfolded are amazing testaments to God’s goodness and his love for us all. By sharing our stories, hopefully we will give you hope and encouragement during what can be a stressful season.
As we watch and wait during Advent for the birth of God’s son – and watch and wait for the second coming of Christ – may we all strive to live holy and godly lives through Bible study, prayer, church attendance and service to others. As our DOK motto suggests, we can’t do everything, but we can do something. What we can do, we ought to do.
Heavenly Father, as we await the celebration of the birth of your son, draw us closer to you and help us live in ways that are pleasing and acceptable to you. Open our eyes, Lord, to what is pure, true, honorable and admirable in your sight and put away those meaningless things that are of this present world. Amen.
